CHENG THENG KEAT

Managing Partner

Background

Cheng was called to the Malaysian Bar on 1.8.2008.
He graduated from the Northumbria University at Newcastle, United Kingdom with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) with Honors in 2004 and thereafter has conferred Certificate in Legal Practice by the Malaysian Legal Qualification Board in 2007 by self-study. He started chambering under his master, Mr. Tharumarajah a/l Thiagarajah in Messrs. T. Tharuma & Associates for a period of nine months.
After he was called to the Malaysian Bar, he joined Messrs. Lio & Partners, Messrs. Cheong Wai Meng & Van Buerle, Messrs. CP Tang & Partners and Messrs. Allen & Associates as Legal Assistant in Litigation Department.
In year 2013 to 2014, Cheng was appointed as Registrar for the Commission of Enquiry into the Failure of Two Civil Structures in the State of Penang.
In year 2018, Cheng was once again being appointed as Registrar for the Penang State Commission of Inquiry to investigate the Tanjung Bungah landslide incident.
His legal experience during the past fifteen years at Subordinate Courts, High Court, Court of Appeal and Federal Court includes contract law, banking litigation, property conveyancing and related corporate, banking and securities documentation, general civil litigation such as debt recovery, hire-purchase, landlord and tenant matters, employment (industrial) matters, late delivery claims, property management litigation such as recovery of service charges, family matters such as divorce and adoption, personal injuries and accident matters, bankruptcy and company winding-up matters, judicial management of company, probate and estate matters, defamation cases and other general advisory services relating thereof.
Cheng is also involved in preparing, drafting, vetting through and handling commercial agreements, including but not limited to partnership agreement, joint venture agreement, dealership agreement, distribution agreement, personal loan agreement and employment related agreement. He is also involved in drafting wills and testaments, drafting creation of trusts, deed of separation and tenancy agreement.

LEE GEK YEAN (KAREN)

Background

Karen Lee was called to the Malaysian Bar on 31.7.2006.
She graduated from the University of London with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) with Honors in 2004 and obtained her Certificate of Legal Practice (CLP) qualification in 2005.

After she was called to the Malaysian Bar, Karen Lee joined a legal firm in Penang and
was practicing as an Advocate & Solicitor handling conveyancing matters including
sale and purchase of property and land, housing schemes, banking and securities
documentation for loan and banking facilities. She was also involved in general civil
litigation matters in the area of debt recovery, breach of contract, bankruptcy as well
as various other works such as estate succession, family matters, drafting and
negotiation of partnership agreements, joint venture agreements, tenancy agreements
and etc.

Karen Lee ceased practice in August 2008 and joined Hwang-DBS Investment Bank
Berhad as Legal cum Compliance Executive. For most of her professional career in the
Bank, she worked towards addressing the Legal and Compliance concerns of the Bank
internally and externally with numerous regulatory authorities, including Central
Bank of Malaysia, Securities Commission, Bursa Malaysia on the relevant regulatory
directions required of the Bank.

In 2012, Karen Lee joined one of the world leading multinational Information
Technology companies, DELL in Penang, Malaysia as their Contracts Manager. She
had then since been working on various procurement contracts, amongst others –
suppliers agreements, distribution agreements, services agreements relating to data
centers and cloud provision.

Karen Lee resumed practiced in 2016. Her primary area of practices includes Corporate Commercial, Property and Conveyancing, Estate Planning, Banking Finance and Securities.
